Creating the conditions for culture to thrive

I am a cultural development consultant working across cultural strategy, place-based development, partnerships and programme leadership.

My work spans local, national and international contexts, helping organisations and places shape ambitious ideas and translate them into practical delivery. I have particular expertise in building partnerships across local government, the cultural sector, artists and communities; developing festivals and public programmes; convening stakeholders around complex issues; and fostering national and international collaboration and knowledge exchange.

Over more than twenty years working in arts and culture, I have developed a strong understanding of what enables culture to thrive. I combine strategic thinking with practical delivery, but I am always looking beyond individual programmes to what they can build: strengthening cultural infrastructure, building stronger cultural communities, ties and networks, and creating the conditions for cultural activity to continue, develop and grow.

Experience

Wandsworth Arts & Culture Service

Founding Producer, Wandsworth Arts Fringe / Senior Producer, London Borough of Culture

For more than twelve years I have worked with Wandsworth Arts and Culture Service, founding Wandsworth Arts Fringe and helping develop it into one of London's largest open-access arts festivals. My work has included developing the festival model, supporting artists and venues, commissioning and programme development, building partnerships and creating opportunities for cultural activity across the borough.

A significant part of this work has been about strengthening the cultural ecology around the festival: developing long-term relationships between artists, venues, communities, cultural organisations and the Council; supporting more than 1,000 artists; working with more than 50 venues each year; and developing the Hub Venue model to strengthen connections between local venues and artists.

More recently, as Senior Producer for Wandsworth's London Borough of Culture, I worked as part of the senior delivery team on an ambitious year of culture across all 22 wards. My work spanned place-based cultural development, artist and community engagement, partnership building and the development and delivery of complex cultural programmes.

Projects included Urban Flow, an international cultural exchange developed with Kinetika, Attakkalari Dance Company and Tavaziva Dance; Sing to Thrive, a borough-wide programme exploring the role of singing in health and wellbeing; and co-producing the London Borough of Culture finale at Battersea Power Station, which welcomed more than 65,000 people. Across the programme, I worked with artists, communities, cultural organisations, Council services and external partners to connect cultural activity with wider civic priorities.

What Next? Culture

Operations Lead

At What Next? Culture, the UK's largest independent, free-to-access movement for arts and culture, I work across organisational development, governance, programme development, sector engagement, policy and convening, working alongside the Directors, Leadership Group and regional Chapters.

I have played a key role in convening national conversations bringing together cultural organisations, artists, freelancers, local authorities, funders, Arts Council England and policymakers around issues including cultural investment, devolution, AI, freelancer support and sector resilience.

A central part of this work is strengthening connections across the UK's cultural ecology: enabling local experience to inform national dialogue, creating spaces for knowledge and perspectives to be shared, and helping sustain the structures and relationships that enable the movement to operate nationally while remaining connected to its regional Chapters.

World Fringe

Director of Programming

At World Fringe, I work with festivals and cultural leaders across an international network connecting more than 300 Fringe festivals worldwide. My work spans organisational development, international partnerships, festival support, programming and knowledge exchange.

I work directly with emerging and established festivals, sharing learning, helping navigate challenges and connecting organisations with peers and potential partners internationally. I also lead the programming and delivery of the biennial World Fringe Congress, bringing together festival leaders, artists and cultural organisations from around the world to exchange knowledge, develop collaborations and strengthen the global Fringe movement.

As with my work locally and nationally, the focus extends beyond individual programmes: building trusted relationships, strengthening peer networks and creating the infrastructure through which festivals can share knowledge, collaborate and support one another over the longer term.

Vauxhall One BID & Lambeth Council

Cultural Programmer

As Cultural Programmer in Vauxhall, I developed and delivered a place-based cultural programme connecting culture, public space, heritage and community engagement.

Working across the BID, local authority, artists, businesses and community organisations, I built partnerships and developed public-facing cultural activity designed to animate Vauxhall's public spaces, strengthen its cultural identity and contribute to wider placemaking.

The role included commissioning and producing large-scale outdoor cultural events and developing Brilliant Vauxhallwith Emergency Exit Arts, alongside a wider programme using culture to bring people together and build stronger connections between artists, communities, businesses and place.

Earlier and additional work

My wider experience includes producing the online programme for the West of England Combined Authority's Citizens' Assembly for Culture with Citizens for Culture; working as Creative Producer for Cowley Road Carnival; producing Wandsworth's local programme for The Streets, activating high streets through cultural activity; and working as an Outdoor Events Producer for Brighton Fringe.

How I Work

For me, culture is not simply an outcome of successful places; it is one of the ways successful places are created.

I enjoy working with organisations at moments of opportunity, development and change: helping people clarify ideas, understand what is possible, build the right relationships and translate ambition into action.

My approach is collaborative and practical. I bring strategic thinking together with an understanding of what it takes to deliver, whether I am supporting cultural strategy development, advising an organisation or artist, shaping a programme, convening stakeholders or developing partnerships across places and borders.

Across all of this, I am interested in what remains beyond an individual programme: stronger cultural infrastructure, stronger cultural communities, ties and networks, and greater capacity for people and organisations to work together.

At the heart of my work is a belief in the value of bringing people together — creating the conditions for different perspectives to be heard, ideas to develop and meaningful collaboration to emerge.
